Learning at LMMP

Montessori pedagogy

Very well developed all around the world, the scientific educational method of the Italian doctor Maria Montessori has several specific characteristics:

“Help me to do it by mysef”

Children from 2 years old are striving for independence and Montessori schools provide the environment and daily rhythm to allow them to do things on their own.

Freedom of choice

We believe that the motivation of learning is natural and that classroom environment should promote it by allowing students to choose their activity and work by themselves. We also let students repeating an activity as much as they want as children learn through repetition.

Mix aged classroom

Studying environment with students from different ages as a source for sharing and learning.

Uninterrupted blocks of work time

In order to develop their concentration span, children need a non interrupted working cycle: for more than 2 hours they are working on their own with activities of their choice or with teachers, following the length of time that suits their interest.

Freedom of movement

Children are learning by moving: that is now well known in the field of science of education. In a Montessori classroom, children can choose
to work on a table or a mat, can change activities, carry their material by themselves and take part of chores to take care of their environment

Bilinguism French-Chinese

The bilingual environment is a daily reality for our children and the necessity to create an educative environment that matched their family environment is crucial. We are the first bilingual French and Chinese Montessori kindergarten in Beijing. In each classroom, the children are guided by two Montessori teachers: one French and one Chinese, who use only one language to communicate and teach the students.

Emotionnal Intelligence

Young children discover emotions for the first time : happiness, sadness, anger, excitement... More often than not their behaviour is profoundly influenced by those emotions. Identifying, naming and expressing these feelings is a key part of their healthy development. This is why La Maison Montessori de Pékin has since its very beginning been integrating Social Emotional Learning into its curriculum and classrooms. Thus providing all of our students the necessary vocabulary and tools to help them not only navigate their own feelings but also to increase their empathy and ability to recognize these feelings in others.

Acquiring these skills is critical not only for their further studies but more importantly for their own personal lives at home, with their family and with their friends. We believe a strong foundation will allow them to better handle multiple types of challenging situations ranging from common frustration to peaceful conflict resolution.

LMMP teachers and staff are trained in Emotional Intelligence and Social Emotional Learning tools so they can integrate their skills not only in their teaching but also in all interactions with colleagues and parents at the school, thus providing support to one another and modelling for the children to learn from.

Environmental education

Taking care of the environment is a founding pillar of LMMP's education and philosophy. Teachers will provide many opportunities to children to learn about the world around them and the necessity to protect it. Recycling, up-cycling, limiting one's consumption to one's needs are all elements deeply integrated in our curriculum. Planting activities take place regularly in and out of the classroom, while fieldtrip to organic farms, Natural museum and other green spaces are opportunities for children to discover the biodiversity surrounding them and its importance.

Actions weighing more than words, LMMP aims to do its fair share to incarnate the ideas it promotes. From environmental friendly cleaning supplies to reducing and recycling common wastes, LMMP also has partnered up with several local organic farms and promotes their produce in the LMMP community.

Having participated in the Nurseries for Nurseries friendly school garden competition since its creation in 2016, LMMP has also launched in 2019 a One Student One Tree program and will plant and care for one tree for each new student of the school.
