Montessori pedagogy

Montessori pedagogy is very well developed all around the world, the scientific educational method of the Italian doctor Maria Montessori has several specific characteristics:

"Help me to do it by myself"

From birth, children yearn for independence, and Montessori schools provide them with an environment allowing for independent work.

Freedom of choice

We believe that the desire to learning is natural, and the classroom environment must encourage children by letting them choose work. We also let children repeat their work as much as they like, because repetition is their learning tool.

Mix aged classroom

A learning environment with children of different ages is a source of communication and discovery for all.

Uninterrupted blocks of work time

In order to develop their ability to concentrate, children need an uninterrupted work cycle during which they learn to work alone on an activity of their choice or with the guidance of a teacher. The working time adapts to their interest and increases with their ability to concentrate.

Freedom of movement

Children are learning by moving: that is now well known in the field of education science. In a Montessori classroom, children can choose to work on a table or a mat, can change activities, carry their material by themselves and take part of chores to take care of their environment.

Bilingual education

Living in China, the bilingual environment is a daily reality for our children and it is crucial for us to create an educative environment that matches their family needs. Our teaching teams are built to promote bilingualism in each classroom. During the day, the children are guided by two Montessori teachers: one Chinese and one of foreign language, both of them only use one language to communicate and teach the students. In this way children quickly understand the codes of each language.

Emotionnal Intelligence

From a very young age children discover a wide range of emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, excitement... Often their behaviors are profoundly influenced by those emotions. Identifying, naming and expressing these feelings are key part of their healthy development. This is why La Maison Montessori de Pékin has, since its very beginning, been integrating Social Emotional Learning into its curriculum and classrooms. Thus providing all of our students the necessary vocabulary and tools to help them not only navigate their own feelings but also to increase their empathy and ability to recognize these feelings in others.

Acquiring these skills is critical not only for their further studies but more importantly for their own personal lives at home, with their family and with their friends. We believe a strong foundation will allow them to better handle multiple types of challenging situations ranging from common frustration to peaceful conflict resolution.

LMMP teachers and staff are trained in Emotional Intelligence and Social Emotional Learning tools so they can integrate their skills not only in their teaching but also in all interactions with colleagues and parents at the school, thus providing support to one another and modeling for the children to learn from.
